The 351 in my '97 F-250 HD is burnin the contacts on the cap and rotor. The lastest cap has about 150 miles on it, the contacts are blistered and white. It has been doin this since I bought the truck. I tried the timing in different spots to see if it was from arcing due to too much advance but no change. Any ideas. Im gettin tired of changing caps or srapin the contacts every couple of weeks.
Do you put the dielectric grease on the rotors nose? Everybody skips that part!! Don't be one of those types it takes two extra minutes to apply the grease to the rotor and every spark plug boot but it is worth it!! I recommend the crc in the spray can it's a lot easier to work with!!
Just on the nose not the center contact!!! Yeah it's one of the more overlooked things that can really help in the long run!! You could probably put a thin layer on each contact to keep them good too!!! It keeps the oxidation down!
I never thought about that. Just figured it was from something in the ignition system since it was just a 1/8 wide strip on each contact where the rotor passes. I bet runnin the beach and all the salt air doesnt help much either.
I need to bring my meter home from work and check the wires against spec I guess. Put the dielectric grease on it anyway just gotta run it for a bit to find out what happens.
more than likely if you live and drive on the beach, it is because the salt air and the ionizing effect of the spark itself!! I used to drive my truck across a tidal flat to shore launch my boat. I have all my connectors, dist, etc. coated in dielectric, Also if you drive on the beach and in the water cold galvanizing paint for undercoating and zinc anodes on the frame will help your truck live alot longer!!! Some of the holes would be up to the door in brackish water! I ain't sying I don't have rust but most of it was there when I got the truck, I think it has helped overall because I don't always spray off after a day out!
