i just got a used 5th wheel camper and hitch about a month ago. this is my first one so i don't know very much about it. my queston is there is a little bit of play in the hitch. when i take off from a stop you can feel the camper slide back a little bit. i went to a local rv store and they said that is normal but i wanted to ask here.
That's a very subjective question. Ideally, there should be a fairly tight connection between your king pin and hitch. It depends on the hitch you have. At the low end, dollar wise, all you get is a rod with a piece of flat bar welded to it. It works but over time the king pin will wear a shallow depression in the bar. It's a natural wear and tear thing. This will create slop or jerky starts and stops. As you go up in price , the retaining mechanism gets a bit more complicated to where the mechanism will wrap itself around the king pin and hold same fairly tight with no chance of wiggle.
You may also want to check your hitch mount. Are all the nuts and bolts tight. Look at your hitch disconnect pins. Are they worn ?
If all else fails, check with RV guys in your neighborhood and compare notes. You'll find that your RVing neighbors will only be too glad to render an opinion and perhaps help you spend your money.
I just bought a Pullrite Super 20.5k 5th hitch. If I take off faster than normal I will get a small klunk from the pin. ( my truck thinks its a sports car.!) Other wise there's no sounds coming from the back!

Slack in a RV 5th wheel hitch is a common complaint. That is the main reason I decided to stay with a commercial hitch when I built my Mack toter that I pull my 37' 5er with.
my hitch is a draw tight 20k hitch. it has the 2 jaws. it does the same thing that nubee1 said. so i guess that i am ok. its not bad, just made me worry alittle. but now i feel better. thanks guys
