I hope someone can give me advise. We have a 88 B2 with a automatic transmission and a 2.9 engine. The problem is that when traveling more than 45 mph and release on the gas peddle the transmission will not engage again until the speed drops to around 40. The speed that it re-engages is not consistent as it sometime re-enages if the intial speed was 60 mph, it will re-engage at 50 mph. This occurs whether in overdrive or not. The up shifts appear to be alright and re-engaging is not a problem when less than 45 mph. I was hoping that it was an overdrive switch, but since this occurs whether in overdrive or not seems to rule that out. The fluid level is full or even overfull and I don't know if this would have an effect. A parts guy stated that this is a common Ford problem because people drive in overdrive instead of putting it into overdrive only when going above 50 mph. Is this a common issue? My new Ford doesn't even have a drive vs. overdrive selection. Any thoughts on this problem? Unless someone can offer an alternative, I will be taking the B2 into a trans shop on Monday. If I am going to have to rebuild or replace the trans, are there any thing I should do as part of the rebuild in terms of better replacement parts or a different trans? Thanks!
Thanks for the suggestion, but if this was my vehicle instead of my son's I would probably do this. It appears that the overdrive is out. At this point we are looking at rebuilding the transmission with the all the updates and installing a shift kit. Thanks.
