Hi, I have recently had the tranny changed in my 93 3.0 rwd. I purchased the tranny(rebuilt 93 ranger) from a reputable used ford parts dealer, and had it installed by his recomended tranny shop. It now seems to have less power upon initial acceleration and hard shifts into second. There is also a definite clunk when it gears down when coming to a stop.
Back to the tranny shop I go. The guy tells me that there is a dead cylinder, causing low compression and therefore bad vacuum, causing it to shift like that. Could this be right???I'm thinking it could just be a weak tranny.
I am now thinking that the bad shift/clunk, could be a tranny mount or u-joint.
I was told I had a bad cylinder (actually, it was the valves) in my Aerostar and never noticed any problems due to low vacuum. The vacuum was actually within specification. Did you get any numbers (vacuum, cylinder compression) from the mechanic?
One thing that could affect shift performance is the vacuum modulator. It could either be bad, not adjusted correctly (if adjustable) or the vacuum line may not be hooked up or could have leaks in it. You may want to check that out.
