I was just reading elsewhere on this board, and someone was saying that they used a lead additive in their gas. To the tune of $6 to treat 300 gallons. Isn't that a cheap way to increase the octane rating? What's the best octane for a 10.5:1 compresion 428? What additives do you reccomend to the there?
I'm not sure if the fake lead additives boost compression like the real lead but you definitely need to be hunting for 93 octane and some sort of booster to keep the pinging away.
Most of the "octane boosters" for sale at Wal-Mart, Pep Boys, etc., are little more than snake oil. You're wasting your money. Run the lowest grade of gas you can without pinging. Even that 428 should run just fine on premium unleaded without an additive if it is tuned properly. You may have to back your timing off a little or run a lower temp thermostat, but you shouldn't need additives.
If it is critical to wring every last pony out, so you need to run very advanced timing, and you're pinging on hi-test unleaded, then you need either an additive or racing fuel. If you really need an octane booster, spend your money on something that actually works -- real tetraethyl lead ("TEL"). The only real TEL additive I know of is Lead Supreme-130 from Kemco Oil.
