Cab mount bushing removal

Ok after all the work ive done to my trucks ive never had to replace any cab mount buchings. Right now im in the middle of a cab swap on a 78 supercab. I got all the bolts out but 1 in the cradle. It broke off. My question is how do i get the 2 pieces apart? like as in the top adn bottom bushing? apparentyl them come apart but i dont know how. Any hints?

Screw the bolt back in a bit and then hit the bolt with a hammer ( a good hammer), making sure you hit the bolt head square. If a bolt broke off, you may have to get your torch out.

My suggestion is to use a torch wrench. I tried a dozen different ideas, still came down to cutting them off with a torch. The cab mounts are still availble through Ford.

Hey Buck that trick worked like a charm. I still got the one with the broke off bolt left but the others came out slick as can be. Thanks man.

When I did my body bushings, I got all of the bolts out pretty easy, but separating the shells so I could replace the mounts was impossible. I just torched them out, and made new ones. When I tried doing the bolt and hammer trick, all I managed to do was separate the nut from the shell.

Ya, some of those bushings are so rusted that you end up torching them off and ruining the hole thing. The bolt and hammer trick works much of the time, but there is always one stubborn one and if you are real unlucky, all 4 of them and the radiator support ones also. I was lucky and saved my cab mount hardware so I use again with polyurethane bushings, but had to get new radiator support hardware.

crazyredneckanyhow, glad that it worked for ya.

I ran into the same problems as above with the rad. supports. I will need to replace the whole assembly after cutting it out. Where is a good source for them (keeping it original)? How is the ride comfort on the cab comparing the polyurethane vs the rubber. Is it a stiffer ride with the poly's? I would think so!

the shims are to align the body. Typically you put back what you take off. If you have no clue what was there, you will find out when your doors hit against your fenders. Add shims until the fender lines up with the door correctly. The urethane body bushings are available from energy suspension, and P-S-T, which are re-badged energy suspension. I buy them from summitracing.com. Great prices, great customer service. I have no clue where to buy the shells from, I had to make my own out of some large washers, and a legnth of 5/8" pipe.

thanks. i figured they were all in there when it was new. i doubt anybody was taking it apart and adding shims as the bushings sagged. they didn't take care of anything else on my truck! and besides, if it had been apart that many times in the past, that would make it easy to take apart now. DOUBT IT! anyway was thinking about replacing body bushings, maybe with poly's, and just wondered if all those shims needed to go back in. so like i said, thanks a bunch
