Still good?

Heres my question. Dad has a 428 torn apart by our shed. Its been there for probably 5-10 years. Can it still be good? The crank and block is what I'll consider using. Everything has a light surface rust on it. can that be taking off the crank w/o hurting it? Or am I just wasting my time with this stuff? It would be nice to be able to use these parts and build a nice 428. I know I can take it to a machine shop and have them check everything but if you guys don't think they will be good i won't even bother paying the guys. thanks for any help
Richard

The engine is junk! Let me come and get it and I will deal with it. Just kidding. Depending on how much rust is on the walls and how much it has been previously bored would dictate what can be done with it. The crank can be turned up to .060 over so That is still good I would hope. It will take some time and work to get the block cleaned up but it is definitely worth it. Oh and welcome to FTE!

No kidding. If Ratsmoker doesn't haul it away for you, I will.

Definitely have it checked out. A decent machine shop wouldn't charge you much, if anything, to look it over and give you an opinion. A 428 block can easily be bored to .060 over, so unless it's been previously overbored and/or has LOTS of rust, the block is probably salvageable. A good rebuiladable 428 block is probably worth $200-800 depending on condition and details (CJ and SCJ blocks, for example, are worth more). That crankshaft can be turned quite a bit, too, if necessary, and is probably worth $75-150 as is, and $150-400 once it's been cleaned up and magged. You've got the building blocks for a great engine sitting there.
