ok this may seem silly but where do you vent the engine when you use the old style rocker covers and dont want to punch holes in them?
My old c--vy 283 had a "thingy" at the back of the block orignally before I changed it. I want to use these 64 model Merc covers because they make the engine look "cleaner" and they are very unique. call me wierd if you want but if you know where this is done let me know. I don't have the orignal manifold to go by. I will be useing a Edelbrock F-427 intake on it also.

Actually, I had the same question (sort of). I had a chance to buy a nice used set of Moon finned aluminum FE valve covers. They were completely solid, however -- no place for an oil fill cap, breather, or PCV valve. The guy who was selling them told me that they were designed for early model FE's (late 50s and early 60s) that didn't use breathers, and had the oil fill located in the intake manifold.
Thay may be true, but what would it do if I tried to run them on my engine? Isn't the PCV system necessary for performance and durability? Could I just have a machine shop cut them for a stock filler and PCV valve assembly? They sure look nice.

It would be a shame to punch holes in those for sure! I am pretty sure you are right about the oil fill and pcv being in the intake on the older engines because there is not any other place for it. if you still have the intake for a old one its not a big deal. but who wants to use that big heavy chunk of cast iron just to route fuel mixture? I want to use the aluminum manifold that I have so I geuss holes it is.
thanx for the info Will

You are in luck Will, the F-427 manifold has the hole in front for the oil filler tube and the breather hole in the back for the PCV.
