ok i just thought you might like to know this, i bought a BRAND NEW Ruger 10-22 carbine rifle. it is STAINLESS steel so it shouldnt rust, a black synthetic stock, comes with a 10 round clip.
cost- $ 199.00 for the gun, 500 rounds of bullets- $9.00
if you bought one that wasnt stainless steel, just a blued finish with a wood stock it would cost about $149.00
these are simple and cheap guns to use. if you decide to buy a .22 caliber rifle for "home defense" and other purposes, this is the one i would suggest. automatic, clip feeding, and reliable. accurate too.
it took about a half an hour to purchase, i filled out the form, they called the ATF, for a background check, no waiting period, this actually took longer than some of the handguns and rifles ive bought from dealers. a half hour.....
if you need to know more please email me.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Nov-02 AT 06:08 PM (EST)]thanks for the advice BFT250. i think im leaning twords the shotguns though. if i get a .22 it'll be for target shooting.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 02-Nov-02 AT 06:30 PM (EST)]i have a 22 with a 30 something shot banana clip, its semi automatic, very reliable. A 22 if fine for home defense, have you ever been shot by one? i have. got shot in the back from about 50 yards away. i immediately fell to the ground, the pain was horrible, it went straight through me. Don't under estimate the power of this rifle or pistol, the bullet is deadly and precise. At close range like in your house you could easily kill or severely injure the intruder if your a good shot with one round in the chest area, head or gut, especially if its loaded with hollow points. Human beings are much more fragile than wild game. Another good thing about the 22 is that if you do have to shoot it in your house it will not be too loud. It all depends on the person, if you are a horrible shot your 12 gauge will def. do the trick. If you can keep a target and be consistent with the shots a 22 is more than enough. Anyways whatever gun you use it will scare the ***** out of the intruder. It does not take much power at all to pierce human flesh.
to those who are bashing my post about a .22 for home defense- remember i am just trying to give advice to someone who has never owened a firearms before, or so it seems. ( icelander )
for my home defense ti wouldnt be my .22
maybe my colt AR-15, or my russian SKS, or my winchester 30-30, or my glock 9mm, or my H&k .45, or one of my two remington 870 12. guages. i personally wouldnt use my .22 for home defense, because i am much more skilled than some people with bigger more "intruder stopping" guns.
22's are plenty lethal and quite handy.. the 10/22 is an excellent choice for fun or defense... I own both the standard 10/22 and the "T" model with the stainless heavy target barrel and match trigger and they both perform flawlessly.. another good point for a home defense weapon.
A 10 round clip in a short barrelled carbine is a winning combination.. let alone if you have a few pre-ban 30 rounders around like I do :-)
A bad guy'd never make it 10 feet if someone dumped half a clip inta 'em...if they keep moving just keep shooting but stop after they hit the floor or you may be up on a murder charge depending on your local laws...
Also.. 22's (especially out of a carbine) generate very little muzzle flash ...and no blood from the ears after firing it in a confined space would be a nice side effect..

i was walking to my truck and one of my stupid friends was trying to fix the jam in his clip and he set it off and stuck my right in the back. it felt like someone frogged me as hard as they could, i fell down and had trouble breathing. luckily the bullet had missed my vital organs and i didnt have to have surgery because it went straight through me. i havent had pain like that for a long time.i still cant believe i walked away.
22's are a mixed bag for defense. They are very effective when used properly and aimed at the right spots. From reading... typically 22 chest wounds that are not immediately fatal will either heal fine or a few days later the victim will suddenly die. 22s are a favorite of many assasins due to low noise, and lethality when aimed well. I have seem large cattle slaughtered very effeectively with a 22 right between the eyes.
So the key appears to hit the right spot, usually the head or heart. Often the skull will deflect the bullet, plain lead seems to work better for this. The 22 has very little shock or knock down power so aim well. Otherwise the victim, especially large thug types might be po'd by getting shot. A 45 or similar slug will cause nerological trauma which can knock a thug down.
Note that stainless steel will rust and oxidize so do practice good maintenance. Stainless is really rust resistant, not proof. I have had a couple sstainless weapons get oxidized when I didn't know better. Stainless also has a tendency to gall while in service(this may be old news and fixed by better alloys) so they require better lubricants.
Like I said mostly my reading, I've not been shot by any weapon, although I have looked into the barrel of a 25 which looked like a cannon at the time.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Nov-02 AT 02:30 PM (EST)]All firearms can be deadly when the bullet finds the right place. Some that post here are referring to what may be the easiest home defense weapon for those that are not experienced with firearms.
I don't knock the .22 because a firearm instructor told me that once the .22 bullet entered the body they can ricochet around and tear up tour internal organs. I believe him. I also believe Theologian when he said if a guy has multi-layered woolen clothing on, the .22 may not penetrate the skin, or will, at such slow velocity, that it will just penetrate the skin. This could **** off your perp big time.
I would say that different firearms for different purposes. Learn to use a .38, .45, or 9mm, and aim well. If someone has broken into your home, I would think you would stalk them very quietly to get the drop on them. You know your house better than they do, so you have the advantage of surprise. A handgun is easier to carry around and a small hand mirror works wonders around corners. The shotgun thing will scare the bejesus out of any sane person, but it may be too late by then. Rifles are for outdoor shooting and the velocity on some of the larger claibers may propel the round out into the public area where you don't want it to go. They also tie up both of your hands.
As I said previously, make your house very difficult to enter illegally, install a security system, and lastly get a dog. This will truly make using deadly force the last resort. The last thing you want to do is kill someone. No matter who it is, it is an ugly sight, a horrendous experience, and may get you legally prosecuted, even in self defense.
22's are a not a viable self defense weapon. 38's are minimal at least. a drug crazed wildman would not be fazed by either choices unless by a head shot or two. 12 gauge are most deadly but buckshot is not the choice, it will go thru bedroom walls..even neighbors homes if houses are close. if you have to use a 12......choose heavy bird shot, more pellets less power or choose a 20 gauge.......anyone lookin at a shotgun barrel pointed at them gets real passive real quick........Dan
I vote with the majority here - .22 is NOT a good choice for home defense. However, it is a GREAT choice as an inexpensive way to introduce kids or newbies to the shooting sports. My 12 year-old daughter is a regular Annie Oakley with my old Winchester.
Ive never had to shoot at anyone, but if i did id want something that has enough muzzle blast to scare the crap out of them even if i miss. I bought a Glock 27 for just this reason. It is very loud, large caliber .40, yet it has a small frame thats easy to handle. It is the easiest handgun ive ever cleaned.
In my experience with firearms, the larger the gun, the easier it is for the other guy to get. Having said that, I am getting a 12 gauge breech action full choke Remington. It is great for hunting, but the worst for home protection. Yeah, it looks intimidating, but one shot and it's done. My personal coice would be a 9mm semi-auto pistol, ar a .22 pistol. I have even seen guys run from a BB gun that looks like a .45 colt. Scare factor is the number one advantage to a big gun, but a small one can do the job.
