Tranny Problems!!! HELP HELP SOS SOS
It went about 13 miles and seemed to be shifting very firmly. I live on post so I had to wait, idling 5 minutes, at the gate since I did not have a pass.
As soon as I pulled away the tranny got alot worse. It pulled/shifted very hard around 10, 15 and 20 mph. I did not "get on it" just normal driving. The overdrive light on the shifter flashed on and off the rest of the 3 miles home.
Any thoughts...I am severely pissed since the dude said a thousand times it "runs like a bat of hell!"
Lemon laws in Florida???
The engine sounds/runs great...just the tranny sucks...
Not all code readers will read the tranny code. So you might need to shop around. I believe AAMCO will read the codes for free and since they are a tranny shop they will be able to read that one. Of course you will get a sales pitch.
If you can't get it off base, check the fluid. It should be red and smell chemically. If it is pink, brown, black or smells smokey you have a problem.
How many miles on it?
I think lemon laws only apply to dealers, but I could be wrong.
The E4OD prior to 1995 had weak spots especially the torque converter. When you are on the open road at about 45 to maybe 55mph and accelerating GENTLY, do you feel a shudder? Kind of like driving on the rain groove roads? If you do then you have torque shudder.
Torque shudder is a symptom of a slipping lockup clutch in the converter. This causes heat which makes the seals brittle and causes intermittant Harsh Shifting.
You do have harsh shifting which is probably a reason in itself to at least change the tranny fluid. Sometimes this fixes the problem, but don't count on it.
If you do drain the fluid tell us what you see. Color, smell, particles etc. Check the bottom of the pan, check the drain pan too. Look for metal particles bigger than say a grain of rice and more than a couple. How fuzzy is the magnet? Any sludge in either pan?
Get the code read is the best step. I fear you might need a rebuild if it is the converter.
Good Luck,
Jim Henderson
