today i just went ahead a gutted the bottom of the motor because if that rod knock. well on several of the rod bearings, they were wore right down to a copper layer??? the tops were really bad--they are all copper colored. there are markings on the shell but how do i know it they are undersized? wont they have .010 stamped somewhere?? also the oil pump had a tag under one of the bolts that said like 51HV what is that mean? should i replace the rod bolts with new ones from ARP and a new oil pump as well?? oh yeah, the bearings werent scored! just all copper colored---any ideas??? thanks
If you're crank was previously resized there should be engravings on the bearings. The 51HV is actually a 57HV indicating that the pump was a Melling High Volume pump so the motor has been rebuilt probably in the past or just had the oil pump changed. Showing copper on the bearings is normal on a high mileage engine. Mine showed lots of copper too but they were scored badly. I don't know if the last owner knew that he was supposed to change the oil. Definitely go with the ARP bolts and ARP oil pump driveshaft. It is so cheap and will make the engine much more reliable.
Ususally it will come right out and say .010 or .020 etc. You will probably have to get a micrometer and measure the journal. How do they look? I'll get you the journal specs this afternoon. I'm at work.
