Hi, I was wondering how much horsepower I would gain if I changed my original exhaust on my 1970 F-100 Sport Custom with a 390 2barrel to some dual 2 1/2 inch exhaust with 10 inch shorty mufflers?
P.S. I have done nothing to this motor it is bone stock.
Any Help Appreciated thanx.
Steve
Yeah, I mean you could buy a 4 barrel intake for like 10 bucks, then a 4 barrel 600 cfm (maybe a little more) carb for another 200, and that would give you quite a bit of power, and would really complement your dual exhaust.
If the heads, valvetrain and camshaft are stock, switching to a 4 barrel intake won't gain you much, if anything. The bottlenecks in the FE engines are the valves and the exhaust manifolds. True duals will help a little on a stock engine (but not as much as headers). The next biggest improvement in breathing would be a longer duration dual pattern camshaft. Only then would a stock FE benefit from a larger 4v intake and carb. Of course, to really see gains, you need to install bigger valves and port the heads.
For what it's worth, however, the best bang-for-the-buck in the FE is almost always converting a points ignition to electronic. For less than $100 and a few hours of work, you'll get an engine that starts quicker, runs smoother and has better throttle response.
I put on dual 2-1/4" 5 foot straight pipes with glass packs
on the end ,when I say straight I mean straight as an arrow!
This made a decent difference.. but then agian I was driving
a friggin 4 banger for a couple months while the truck was sitting,
talk about having a tired foot from craming the gas to floor
all the time! then when I got the beast goin I put the duals on
and the first drive ruled!I got a 1970 250 c/s custom with
a 390 2bbl in it,2wd.
