Intermittent starting problem

I have an 02 F-150 SuperCrew with the 5.4. Truck will usually start right up. Occasionally, when I go to start it, the engine will crank, fire, then immediately die. On subsequent starts, it just cranks and cranks, but never fires. The battery is strong. After 10 to 15 attempts, it will fire up like nothing was wrong. This problem was rare at first (maybe monthly) but has been increasing in frequency lately. Maybe every 2 - 3 days. Any help??

Welcome to FTE styxbb! Sounds like a IAC valve problem.
Next time this happens, try putting a little bit of pressure on the gas pedal to open the throttle a bit. If this helps, then the IAC is the problem. Time to replace it. Good luck!

Sounds like a fuel pump problem. Next time it cranks and no start check the fuel pressure with a pressure gauge.

I seem to have a similar problem but I have never had it die immediatly after it started. Ususally just crank and crank and crank, then turn the key to the off position and able to start it up after that. I am not answering your quesion, I am just stating my problem in hopes someone could help me out. But the thing is I already have it at a shop so hopefully it will be fixed in a couple of hours.

I have the same vehicle with similar problem, except mine would start up right away, but as soon as I took my foot off the gas, it couldn't find a good idle and would stall. Had to multi-task with right foot on gas and left foot on brake to keep the rpms up while I was at stop signs, etc. Thanks to the dealer and $400, I now have a new IAC, a clean throttle bottle, and I'm sure very shiny fuel injectors. The truck runs great now. I'm still scratching my head as to how they got back there to replace the IAC. They must've trained a monkey with tiny hands to get back there. Its almost impossible to see, much less to get to.
