The same thing has happened twice about two weeks apart with my 2000 7.3. First start in the morning, I wait for the WTS light to go out, and crank. The engine cranks and fires over but doesn't start (normally it starts as soon as it fires on the first try). Turn the key off, cycle the WTS light, and the engine still will not fire at all. Key on and off and cycle glow plugs several times, crank and crank and crank, but nothing I do will make it fire until I depress the throttle a little bit while cranking, and then it starts right up. Anybody have any ideas what might be the problem?
Don't have a good answer for you....just a couple of thoughts...
Maybe has something to do with the fuel pressure regulator or one of the sensors that regulate the fuel system.
I don't know the tech end of what happens when the throttle sends a signal back to the ECM to increase engine speed. That end of the chain would seem to be the problem if it starts once you have the throttle off idle position.
