It also only pertains to fifth wheel towing and not conventional towing.
I think salesperson at the dealer told that the F450 with 4.88 rear end are 50ft pounds of torque less than the 4.3 rear ends ones. You can quote me on that, because I am not sure of that 100%.

Hello all;

If you get a stick or the 4.88 gears in a F-450 you will get the detuned version. All sticks and all 4.88's are detuned. The only saving grace is that it is all done with the computer, meaning a decent aftermarket chip will fix that detail. Then there is the warantee detail to be concerned with.

I am keeping up with all post and see that opinions on the transmission choice is more what you want than which one is good (lookes like they both are)
does the detune goes for every manual tranny??
I am looking for a F350 not a F450.

Thanks

A 350 with the 6-speed is full power. Only the 450 has detuned models.

Only the 450 with 4.88s is detuned. otherwise it would probably tow 25,000# at full power then that might get into the area of too much weight to stop. Heck I towed 16650 with my v10 with 3.73 manual. Never had a problem in 5 years towing with the clutch or transmission. even though it was rated at 9800# towing. In comparison a 450 with 4.88's might even be able to haul 30,000# just would not be too safe. I know with my 99 slowing down was difficult. Verses my new 6.4 auto really does a super job on a panic stop. Coming down the Pocono mountains a BMW spun out( broke a tie rod?) Everbody around me was locking up on the brakes. My 450 slowed down perfect without any locking up. The Transmission really helped. Might have been more difficult slowing that fast with a manual.

A F-450 with 6-speed manual IS detuned to 325 hp & 600 tq. The autos are detuned with 4.88's, and manuals with 4.30's and 4.88's. Believe me I know, because if it wasn't I would have gotten one instead of a 350.
