Ranger Dies While Driving

A friend of mine has an 01 Ford Ranger with a 3.0...it dies on him occasionally whenever he lets off of the gas or the truck is idling (usually with a/c, radio on, lights on)...he thought it may be the battery so he put a new battery in it...there is also a noise that sounds like it is coming off of a pulley that is not lubricated, a dry friction noise (think nails on chalkboard) that comes and goes...i'm not sure if they are linked...we were gonna pull the alternator off and take it to autozone to have it tested but it is a little late in the evening for that...I was wondering if anyone had any other suggestions or has had this issue...

The Idle air control selinoid ( IAC ) could be causing you problems. Some are known to make noise when acting out. The next time you hear this sound unplug the IAC and see if it goes away.

If it's not a pulley, then the "dry friction noise" could be the cam synchronizer:
