Does any body have a holley double pumper on their 390 or other FE motors. I was told that I cannot use the double pumper because you cannot get a automatic kickdown for it. If you are running a double pumper how did you do it. I thought maby the kick down cable from lokar would take care of the problem but holley has not sent me an e-mail back yet.
Well , over here it is easy to buy a little kit of parts to provide a ford kickdown on any holley. If you cant "rat" the parts you need from another carb and put them on. I have always found double pumper to be far more tunable than vac sec, but be accurate and realistic on your size selection.
I wouldn't let something as simple as a kickdown stop you from getting the carb you want. A C6 will operate fine without a kickdown, it just won't drop down a gear automatically when you floor it; unless you are moving really slow, then the vacuum modulator will kick it down. Sort of unessary with a 390 if you ask me; besides if you really need the extra RPM, just simply drop it down one at the collum. I have driven my truck without one for more that 10 years now and I prefer it that way. Since high RPM is harder on an engine, and shifting causes tranny wear, both should last longer without it.
One of the most important functions of the kickdown rod I beleive is to raise the fuild pressure to deal with the extra loads that come at wide throttles opening. Not merely to force a down shift.
I was told that the kick down conversion was not avalable for the double pumper. The holley carb I have no has one but will not fit the double pumper. Also I was told that if I left the kick down off that I would burn up my tranny. How have you driven aroun 10 years with out one. did you just take the rod off. Also does a 750cfm sound too much for a 390, my heads are ported to about as far as they will go. I wish I could put them on a flow bench. And I have 428cj valves, and a 501/533 lift cam from crane.
If the kickdown rod linkage is held in the "up" position on the trans it will not cause any problems with tranny operation. Remember, the only time the kickdown linkage on a C-6 moves is when the throttle pedal is almost to the floor. It is not like other newer transmissions that need the entire throttle range to know when to shift.
Simply put, if you were to never need full throttle you would never know your kickdown linkage was disconnected.
I haven't seen an auto kick down on a double pumper, probably because they aren't designed with vehicles in mind that would need them. Prevalent wisdom says not to run one a street rig, but I have one on my Cougar and love it...but then, its set up for it. Even with a pretty hot engine you would have poor performance with one on a truck, simply due to the weight. I don't think an auto kickdown would work with the design of the double pumper, but let us know what you find out. I'm wrong at least once a week
