First off you should know I'm mainly a Chevy guy. I know, boo hiss. Anyway I like old cars and trucks no matter what brand. Soooo, I bought this old Ford P/U about 5 mos. ago and have been kinda cleaning it up and such. It came with a set of gaskets so I decided to tear everything down and put new gaskets on everything. Anyhow, I haven't seen much about the old flareside trucks on here. Mine is a '71 SWB flareside. It was originally a 6 cyl. truck but a 360 now resides in it. As far as I can tell everything else is stock. It has a T-18 4 speed in it. Are these rare trucks? I got it for $600. I know that's a good deal for any running truck. I mentioned it to a couple of guys at work and they were ready to trade me decent good running 4X4s for the thing sight unseen. Anyhow, I hope this gets me in on this site. I'll post pics. if you like. It's a rough truck, but it's all there. Who else has one of these?
I paid $500.00 for my 1968 long bed pickup (after I was sure it ran and was able to work on it for a day at the seller's house). It had been converted from a 360 to a 302-2V by the owner prior to the person I bought it from. I went to a local wrecking yard and got an equalizer rod and the clutch fork pin so I could try to get the truck moving because the equalizer rod was broken at the top and the clutch fork pin came apart on the guy when the equalizer rod broke somewhere away from his home. I put those parts in at the seller's house the work-day after I started the truck and ran the motor for a while (I started and ran the truck on a Friday, I think, and replaced the rod on the following Monday). I drove it home (3-on-the-tree) on Tuesday with only 2nd and 3rd gear because both linkage rod bushings were missing and I couldn't get it to go down to 1st or reverse. The roof has a plate welded into it where an after-market sunroof was and some pooooor body work that is covering it that used to leak when it rained. A tube of RVT and a few trial-and-error sealing jobs finally got all of the cracks in the bodywork that I believe were letting the water in. I bought another truck to do a cab swap and will be looking into that in future weeks / months / or??
I'd say you got a good deal! Any running, driving old car or truck at a low low price is a deal and worth picking up and working on! I tell my GM and Mopar friends when I find old vehicles they might like.
I can't tell you if it's rare or not because until about 4 months ago I had never thought I would be the owner of a 1968 F-100 either. All of my other toys are 60s Mustangs (also know as Rustangs) and 60s Cougars.
Fisher and gadd, thanx for the replies. Not to worry about coming over to the "light", as I said, I like 'em all. I'm a true auto and cycle enthusiast. I'll drive or ride just about everything except a Matador or a Honda Rebel!?$ That being said, I found a donor truck for parts. Only problem is that it is a '77 and an auto. Don't think I can use the driveline and there aren't many body parts I can use either. The tailgate looks pristine though. And the price is right too, FREE! Anyhow, I'll keep you posted.
As others posted Welcome aboard; purchasing a running truck at a low price and getting another one free is awesome. There's alot of body differents between the two era's; but there's also drive train compatable as well. View the search site both on 67-72 & 73-79 forum's for those like item ideals. The tailgate looks similair both there's a big difference; if you can't use / swap parts; you always can post parts in the classified for others to buy etc. I wouldn't be surprise you can't sell the donor truck parts once you figure out what you could use; for the amount close to the initial purchase price of your first truck.
I have a 69 LWB. The shortbed is a lot more rare and sought after. Lucky for me I actually like the long sleek lines of the LWB more so pretty easy to get what I wanted.
I'm like you in that I love all brands of classic iron. I have two 66 Mustangs and a 69 F-100, but I also have a 69 Barracuda project to start when I finish the ones I am working on, and I'm also working out a deal to get a 70 Camaro project car (my favorite body style of the brand C pony car!).
Enjoy your project truck, I hope it turns out nice for you.
Hey, thanx for the info guys! And Cracker, you dog you! A '70 Camaro? Split bumper with that one of a kind Endura grill out front? Man what a find, I'm soooo jealous man! I got a '79 Z-28 with T-tops and such. It's the car me and all my buddies wanted when we were in HS, but now that I'm more "mature" I gotta say I got a soft (or hard) spot for the '69s and the '70s as well. The three '79, '69 and '70 are about my faves. Go man, go!!!!!!! Vroooom!!
i have a 67 f-250 i bought about 3 yrs ago, for a measly $80.00, all original except for engine/tranny and dual exhaust. now it has a 390 mildly worked. young couple from oregon was pan-handling for gas money to get back home, so i bought the truck and gave them a ride to bus station. now i think that was a great deal for a running truck 3yrs ago. lol

If you don't have PS, PB, or front disc brakes, wiper delay, ect, the parts off of the 77 will work.
