Computer Question: program to change settings on friends computer in another town?

Ok, so he has dial up... Has Norton... He has no idea what an IP addy even is.. I tried to get him to download Logmein last night, I think we both got a version that is a 30 day trial??
Is there another version, or is that the free one?
Will it even work over the internet like that?
Its difficult to get him thru downloading, installing, and operating~actually hooking our machines together with his skill level... Its been interesting..
Ill keep trying with logmein...
