I Am Looking For A 4 Barrel Intake Manifold For A 330/361/391 Ft Engine. I Have Heard That The Fe Intake Will Not Work. Does Anyone Know Where I Can Get A Stock 391 4v Intake? Can The Fe Intake Be Modified To Work?
The difference is the heat cross over passage. Unless you are willing to forgo the passage a FE intake might work on the FT engine. You can also swap the heads to make life easier. While I was rebuilding a 390, the machinist was asking me how I had so many heads and where I was getting them. He couldn't even get a set anymore unless he paid twice the price, I guess they are getting scarce around here. Another one of his customers was rebuilding a 361 and had brought in his 5th head that was cracked. I offered one of my spare 390 heads but he set me straight in regards to the cross over.
Where are you located? I have a 4v intake that is a mystery...all we know is it doesn't fit the FE, but it looks like an FE intake, so I'm guessing it's for a FT. It's currently in Delaware. Free if you pick it up (I can get it to PA).
I'm In Northern Arizona. I Appreciate The Gesture But The Shipping Would Probably Cost More Than I Paid For The Motor. Jfyi-the Ft Engine Has A Unique Heat Riser Set Up. There Is A Transfer Port That Pushes Hot Exhaust From The Exhust Manifolds, Through The Cylinder Head, And Into The Intake Manifold. If You Look At The Intake Manifold It Appears To Have An "extra" Port Between The Two Center Intake Ports. Also The Casting Numbers Will Proabably Have A "t" In It (such As C4te) To Designate That It Was Designed For A Truck Application.
Cookie, I did a quick glance in Steve Christ's book and it appears to be a carb warming port. I have blocked that port when I had the intake off once and didn't notice any difference. I also run a phenolic spacer under my carb so it isn't feeling any heat anyway.
Depending on your setup it might not be that important, but do look into it more.
the FT intake will not fit on FE heads. i tried this once long ago when a salvage yard sold me a an FT intake thinking it was an FE intake. the motor was on an engine stand and i struggled with it trying to get the bolts in the heads and finally gave up and called my step-brother and he explained and showed me the difference. i returned the intake to the salvage yard and got an FE intake and problem solved.
