A friend of mine is gonna give his '86 F350 diesel. The truck has been off the road for about 1 1/2 years. He says it runs, but the clutch is completely shot so it won't drive. That and some rust issues is why he's giving it away. The truck has 180,000+ miles on it. I've never dealt with a diesel before. Is this worth messing with? If it was well taken cre of, is there much life left in it? I was planning to put the dump hoist from this truck on my '70, and scrapping/selling the rest, but now I'm thinking of fixing this thing. 4x4 would be nice.
You can expect to spent some coin just to get it road worthy, but as a parts truck, its already worth $1000+ IMHO.
Give it a good once over, to make sure as much works as possible, like engine, hydraulics, and 4x4 (if possible), at least make sure you know what works and what doesn't.

I bet its got a D60 font axle too, those can sell for $800 and up wher I live.
Yeah, TAKE IT. I take it, it has a 4spd manual, think its a T18 or 19, anyways those are indestructible... I have been to new york in the winter so I know why you want 4wd, they won't start the greatest in the winter but you plug it in and it will fire right up.. If you don't want it I'll take it
The back wall and floor of the cab is rotted VERY badly. My friend is a tree guy and doesn't have the time to mess with it. As I said, I wanted it for parts, but now I'm considering fixing. Once I get it to the house, I'll look it over more closely and work from there. Again, my main question is what about these older diesels. Is it worth messing with if it has nearly 200K miles in it? I know it has some valuable parts, and I already have two trucks, but a third could be fun.
You fix the clutch and I bet you could get $1000 out of it... These things are the funnest things in the world to drive, I think they are even funner to drive than my cummins that goes 3x faster, but a ford working hard just to do something the cummins does so easy just makes it that much funner to drive. I hold mine to the floor everywhere I go. Last winter we got 15" of snow, I wasn't driving the ford at that time, had it in the barn, well the dodge is 2wd, so umm, yeah... Went down, somehow the ford started, i drove it up and hill with all that snow with a completely flat tire, all I did was hold it to the floor, it made it... I also have NO problems with ice on the road with it.. I have had several people almost slide into me but when I go where they were sliding, mine won't slide.. these old beasts are just awesome. And a FREE one just makes it all the funner, sell that bed and you can cover the cost of anything that breaks on the ford, or needs fixed. If you hate the rust holes just go get some sheet metal and sheet metal screws and make it all fit.. That thing is a diamond in the rough!
Just drive it around your land then.. If you still can't see any reason to keep it, part it out.. The engine must be good because you have rust.. Mine leaks so much oil that it bathes the engine, trans, transfer case, and somehow mists to the back axle, gets all the body panels.... So if yours is that bad, the engine must be that good either way you look at it, for fun or for profit, you will get lots however way you go...
Yes, that rot is pretty bad, but just get a new cab if you want to fix it up. Anything from 1980-1986 will work, and 1987-1996 will also work with some mild modding. Just be glad its not an excab...
For the amount of truck you have there, I think it would be worth the investment. The engine is not even middle aged, and unless it has an underlying problem, it should be good for another 200 000.
The hydraulic winch and dump body are included. If I do rebuild it I'd like to trade the winch for an 8' snowplow with somebody. The winch and the dump are powered by a PTO pump and controlled by a valve body on the bumper or switches on the dash. I don't know for sure if everything is in working order.
Yes it would be cool to keep it and drive it on my land, but my land is only 1/4 acre. I live in the suburbs of New York City.
I've got it home now. Funny how what was a possibility at somebody else's place is just a pile of junk when you drag it home. It will be scrapped. I think the drivetrain is going in my friend's '50 Chevy 1 1/2 ton dump. The hydraulics will go under the bed of my '70. The rest is available, or will be scrapped. I'll post in the classifieds when I know what's available, such as axles, springs, some body parts, etc.
