High Pressure Oil Pump

Hello everyone,
I am new to this sight so I don't really know how this works. I am having trouble with my pickup. It is an '02 Ford Powerstroke with a 7.3L. It has about 75,000 miles. It has run great up until now. Yesterday it developed a fuel problem. Fuel makes it to the filter, but not to the engine. I was going to try replacing the High Pressure Oil Pump, but I was told if it was bad it wouldn't run at all. This morning it started just fine, ran for about five minutes, then died again. I really don't want to replace the pump because it is expensive. Is there anything else I should try first? Any advice would be great.

Welcome to FTE....After the truck dies, when you crank it, does the tach move? If not try the CPS. I doubt it would be the HPOP.

You might also want to change your fuel filter, if you haven't already done so.

Also, if you go get a new CPS, make sure that the part number ends with a "B", and don't pay more than about $20-$30 for it. If the timing is not critical, there are multiple sponsors on our site that will ship it to your door for less than $25.

The tach doesn't move until the engine fires. It will run for about 3-5 minutes at a time, but I have to let it sit for at least 1 or 2 hours between starts.

Does it start right back up after it dies? Does it ever "buck" while driving it?

I tend to agree with JetDoc on the CPS. The truck just dying like someone shut the key off is many times a CPS issue. The tach moving while cranking is one way to tell on some trucks but it might not work on yours. I have an '02 and my tach doesn't move at all when i cank mine and my CPS is fine.

If by chance you are close to Houston I have two extra CPS modules. We could pop one in and see if the problem goes away. Just throwing that out there. Chances are you are a long ways from me.

Who suggested replacing the HPOP?

the fuel and oil systems are seperate on these engines. the HPOP does not send fuel to the injectors, the fuel pump does. However our injectors are hydraulically activated(opened and closed). HEUI = hydralically activated electrically controlled unitized injector.

If you have changed your fuel filter, and the problem has not been fixed, I agree with JetDoc, for $25 change the CPS. If that doesn't fix it then we will start looking at the fuel pump, or in tank screens.

Does it just turn off, or does it start missing and die like it is running out of fuel?
how long since last fuel filter change?
How long ago since the oil was changed? what brand? are you running fuel additive?
Have you drained the fuel bowl? Does the drain drip and leave a small puddle in the driveway overnight?
What are you trying to read codes with?

The fuel filter is new. It has been about 2200 miles since the last change. The engine doesn't miss at all. It actually runs really well then just dies like you turned the key off. I will try the CPS tomorrow. I can't get one today, no stores open. I haven't been using any additives. I use Howe's Lubricator during the winter, but I haven't started this year yet. And actually yes, it does drip overnight. I have had it in to the dealership for that several times. $700 later, I still have the same leak. A friend of mine has a code reader. I don't remember the brand. He said all the codes popping up were normal. I will definitely try the the CPS tomorrow. Thank you for the tip.

If the CPS is fine, then it could be a problem with some gunk before you fuel pump. There are filters inside your tank also.

I cannot agree more. Where did that HPOP come from? Also, generic code readers cannot read PSD codes. I am saying CPS and $20 worth of O-rings to fix the drip in the fuel bowl valve.

The HPOH came from a local mechanic who is reputed to be good with diesels. I am in Central Alaska so my options are limited sometimes. Thank you for your tips.
