What is the purpose of the CDR valve? I have seen it on my truck and heard you guys talk about it but I haven't figured out exactly what its purpose is..can anyone fill me in?
The CDR does the same thing a PVC valve does on a gas motor.
Puts the blowby from the crankcase into the intake to burn the vapors instead of venting them into the air.
The CDR has a diaphram and a spring that allows the CDR to close at higher RPM to keep it from sucking to much oil vapor out of the crankcase which can cause excessive oil consumption.
You need to remove the CDR prefferably every other oil change and soak it in solvent to remove the oil that collects in it.
If you don't, the high temps under the hood cook the oil into a tar that stops the CDR from being able to close.
this is interesting...ive never heard of this before...where would i find this thing on my truck?. I bought this truck about 2 or 3 months ago...i really think i better pull it out and have a look...who knows how long its been since the PO cleaned it!
would that CDR valve take and consume 1/2 QT of oil on a cold morning possably?
cause i live in WI and ive mainly been running my 99 ford diesel in warm weather but it was 25 degrees the other mornin the truck runns like a charm but when i started it on that cold mornin it wouldent stop blowing blue smoke for about 5 min. and i lost a half qt of oil and it never looses oil its not leaking it eithor i know i should be in a newer forum but this caught my eye for my 92 ford 7.3
oh no... i just thaugt of somthing all the local lil critters like to make nests on my motor and in my intake box i check it regularly but i ran the truck the day before it was cold and i can bet when i look tomarrow it will have a nest in there again!! i pulled a heavy trailor and used a lot of turbo so i immagine that it pluged my filed and Dave as you were saying the cdr just burnes oil vapor but at higher RPM it closes and oil sloshes more and if the CDR dosent close it burnes oil as well.
If you take the air filter/filter housing.. off the engine you are left with just the manifold basically and you can see down the intake and everything.. well right between that and the glow plug controller is the CDR, its like a big round thing that has a rubber grommet going into the intake and hose going to the crank case right underneath it.. There are two bolts that hold it onto the intake..
