Odd oil pressure fluctuation??

I have had my 86 f-350 with a 6.9 NA for only about 3 months. When I bought it it never had alot of oil pressure on the stock gauge. The needle ranges from 1/2 way or at about the R in normal at idle. But when I get going down the road it will drop to just to the left of the N in normal on the guage. It will also fluctuate with no rpm change while cruising down the road. The engine runs fine and does not smoke. Does anyone have any idea what would be causing the fluctuation? Should I be worried?

The stock dash guage is not very good.
What it says just means you have oil pressure, no indication of how much you have.

Manual guages are the best option if you want to know how much oil pressure you really have.

The dash gauge can act the sameway in that truck too. Part of the problem is the voltage regulators in the dashes will go out and will let the gauges fluctuate.

Definately! The symptom in BOTH my 86s, is for the temp, oil, and fuel gauge to either peg, or just read way higher than normal. The regulator can be replaced, if you can find one, but I just slap the dash, and they get back in line.

yep the gages are more like glorified dummy lights, they dont read liniarly. they just show good once you are above 7-12 psi or something like that. there is a write up somewhere where you can swap the sending unit out and remove or add a resistor to get some liniarity out of them.

in other words get a mechanical gage

Really? That sounds like a neat idea. Either that, or try to fit an aftermarket gauge in the cluster, but I'd rather have everything look the same if possible.

In my 86 the amp guage has never moved from day one.
Temp guage never really moved much either.
Oil pressure always showed almost pegged on the high end even after 300,000 miles.

Suddenly one day after installing a reman engine, the faster the engine was running, the lower the oil pressure guage read.
I freaked and installed a manual guage.
It was really funny to watch both guages, they went opposite directions as the RPM increased or decreased.

Now a mechanical oil pressure and water temp plus a volt meter reside in a pod on top of the dash.

I will say that my fuel guage has always been rather accurate, still is today.

It seems to me like we would be hard pressed to find two 80-86 trucks that read the same.

My amp guage will respond to glow plug cycling, headlights, and will nearly pegg if the batteries are low after startup, then slowly come back down.

Temp reads at least 1/2 when warmed up, and never goes past 3/4, temp reading rarely reflects operating conditions.

Oil reads about half when cold, and can fall t 1/3 when idling after a hard days work. It does seem to read higher with rpms.

Fuel gauge?? hehe, well, both will try to show empty at about half a tank, but for some reason, the front tank will start to come back up to 1/4 and stay there for a while.

Knock on wood but my dash in my older truck that I have had for years has always been pretty good. I have replaced the regulator twice over the years but It was obvious that it was bad. I forget where I bought them now. It wasn't hard to find but I can't remember for sure though.

I got my new IVR at our Ford parts counter. I believe Napa carries them as well
