How much boost should I see with the ATS Turbo in my "87" 6.9L ? I only develope about 5 psi with my foot in it. Truck runs fine. Just got this truck awhile ago and I don't have a clue. I read in some info provided with the truck that the turbo could get up to 14.5 psi. If thats true do I possibly have a vacumme leak or something. Please any HELPor suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
What is your exhaust system like? The freer flowing the exhaust the more flow to spool up the turbo. Also if you are trying to get her to boost with a empty truck, you may be wasting your time.My 94 didn't build much for boost until I upgraded the squashed downpipe & went to a staight thru exhaust system. And to see real boost you need to load her down, tow a trailer, do something to make the engine work. An empty truck is not enough of a load to make the engine work.
Its the same as mine; ATS 088 non wastegated turbo pack. I also rarely go past 5 psi, and there is a fair amount of smoke with my foot to the floor. It can develope around 10 psi, but I have to let the revs go higher for that.
I can get more boost by turning up the fuel, but then theres even more smoke.
If you are not seeing smoke, then you probably turn the fuel up.
I'm not sure if what you and I are experiencing is the norm for this setup, so I would be interested to find out what others have to say.
Looks the same. Info provided with the truck says it's an ATS 085. Maybe I"ll ry turning up the fuel. About how much should I turn it up. It doesn't blow any smoke now.
Hey there David, with 3.08 gears & an overdrive tranny, you must have an awesome top end speed. Bet your fuel mileage is pretty darm good too.
Thats the idea. I once calculated the top speed to be somewhere around 135 mph. Its unlikely (VERY unlikely) that I'll ever test it though. I can manage 16+ mpg while towing a 20' flatbed trailer at 65-70 mph (how the truck makes its living), but thats on many long hills (and dealling with traffic), as to be expected in B.C. I've never actually tried to cruise at lower speed and running empty.

The 085 is the first gen turbo by ATS, mine is the second one, it seems that the 085 airbox fits the 088 as well, anyway, they show all the ATS systems here:
If you are not seeing any smoke while flooring it, then thats probably your problem. Ideally, you want to see a mild black haze at full power. Turn the fuel screw up by 1/6th of a turn per adjustment, or one flat of the allen wrench, and retest. I think you will enjoy the results.
