Not very good. I ran a 14.7@95 with a 2.2 60 ft time. This new distributor has a horrible curve. If I retard it to where my total is good then it bogs horrible off the line. If I set it for a good takeoff then it will be too advanced and hurts top end. Doesn't ping though. The only thing I managed to break was an header gasket but that would be my fault for not checking the bolts in a while. I was hoping to do better. Anybody know how to recurve a stock dizzy? I want 14 degrees initial and 38 total at 2500rpm.
Nope. that's why I went with the MSD billet dizzy. It's simple to change a spring and a stop bushing that are very accessable to get a large number of advance curves and total advance combinations. I looked at the shop manual for the stock dizzy and got very confused. I didn't even bother trying to tune that thing. The vacuum advance looks like VooDoo to me, especially since I had changed the carb, intake and cam. I felt like the vacuum profile must have changed some.
Now that I think of it, it really didn't fix the rpoblem I was trying to address. Similar symptons to yours. But, I at least don't believe it's a timing issue anymore.
Of course, I'm part lazy and part novice mechanic! I'm sure some of the FE Gurus here know how to tune the stock one.
Rat Thats not good. Try running it with out the vacuum connected. Thats the way I run mine. You can also maybe adjust it through the vacuum hole in the dizzy. with a allen wrench. Its really hard telling with out actually being there. Good luck and keep trying you will get it!!!
to recurve it wouldn't you just have to play with the spring tension on the weights? tighter spring for a later advance and loose ones for an earlier.
just my guess
I was thinking about not using the vaccum advance. Since this dizzy has such a wide range of advance maybe it would be a good candidate. I just hate running like 18 initial degrees to get to 38 total. It makes it pretty hard to crank over. Thanks for the info everyone. Now I get to replcae a collector gasket and the pinion seal on the diff.
The first 14.7 was run with the timing retarded which left me with a huge bog on takeoff but gave me a good top speed. The next couple 14.7's were done with the timing advanced which gave me good takeoff but it lost top end power. Just thought I would post this for everyone to see. No major point.
you also might want to check out moroso they made a lot of recurve kits when I was working for super shops, but that has been a while. Still I dont see why they would stop making them. Mike.
Email me Rat and I will send you my phone #. I will have to talk to you to explain how to set up. The traction bars I use are just plain ole lakewoods fron Autozone. $39.95 I think. But there is something else you will have to do. I you will call me I will give you the whole story. The whole set up should be around $100.00. Just let me know
Oh by the way I was out to the track tonight for my weekly bracket race series. 26 cars in my class I made it to the 1/4's and broke out with a 8.86 on a 8.89 dail in. But still in the money and close if not moved in to #1 in the points race. Tony
