He has 390 heads on it. There was no difference on the trucks. You could opt for some 428CJ heads or a few other types that flow better but the heads you have can be ported quite a bit.
The number between the heads is the casting number, and is helpful in identifying the heads. The heads used on 360's and 390's are the same, with the exception of mabye compression differences for later years.
That casting # is incorect and incomplete. It is most likely a C8AE- something. It really doesn't matter what the last # is though because the Combustion chambers only change about 3 cc's total between the different C8AE heads. The biggest differenc is in the shape and size of the runners. If you were to take some CJ sized valves. 2.09" intake & 1.66" Exhuast and place them in the current heads. Port match the heads to the intake and vise versa. and then add some headers and port match the head to the headers. YOu could probably gain close to 50 HP (wishfully thinking) but it would be alot versus no portmatching. Clean up the walls with some sand paper just to smooth thing out. and you could get a WOW effect out of those old heads. With no other changes other than the headers and some sanding and port work. Might consider it.
If your dad is looking for a new set of heads to do this with there are alot out there. A real good flowing (after some light work) heads are the later year D2TE-A heads. Those can be made to out flow the Ebock aluminum heads. Make sure you out the CJ sized vavling in them though. Hope this helps.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 25-Jul-02 AT 11:25 PM (EST)]I just noticed this great thread.
I have a '72 that came originally with a 360.
I have a C8AE-H head on the passenger side and a D2TE-AA on the driver side. How fast should I try to find a matching D2TE-AA head for it? The truck seems to run ok for now.
In a year or two I'd like to upgrade the bottom end to include the 390 crank and heftier 390 connecting rods (if it hasn't already been done), and add 4bbl, cam, dual exhausts, etc.
Should I just wait for the full rebuild, or is the mismatch worth fixing before that?
for all intents and purposes the to heada are the same in stock form. If you are considering a performance upgrade or just a general rebuild you might want to find head to match one of the 2 you have now. Not a big deal thoughf rom what6 I have heard. It was pretty common for heads to get swapped and mismatched for what ever reason.
The only reason I say don't sweat it to much is they have the same Combustion chamber size and shape.
