Browser myths....

http://mywebpages.comcast.net/Suppor...efoxMyths.html - I've known the majority of these for quite some time but I've never seen anyone put them together in one place before. Read on and find out why I've used Opera for years....

Opera used to be a paid browser. That's why it was never big but its been growing since it became free.

Its a fact that Firefox has more security bugs found and unpatched that any other browser. The "fake" article, is biased, but its and puts in a lot of information (purposefully?) left out of the original due to heavy Firefox bias in the original.

I see hardly any bias in the original. The 2nd article also uses TONS of outdated information. Hell the Anti-Phising part of it, the test did not even use FireFox 2.0 which has a built in phising filter. Can't argue that Firefox does have my security flaws, but it is definitely a safer browser then say IE6 and has much more support for web standards then IE6 and IE7

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, but the article you linked to makes firefox look like a bad browser, even thought it is not.

Ah... there's the rub, huh? Many people try to make IE look like a bad browser. I've used it side by side with Opera for years. Not one security exploit has hit me, no spyware infections, no viruses. Browsers don't cause the problems, people doing stupid things like clicking yes to install unknown plug-ins (hey, there are idiots doing this all the time with Firefox as well, installing spyware), downloading and running unknown EXEs.

What I can't understand is why anyone who would consider Firefox as their primary browser would not consider Opera. Its simply faster, smaller, more feature rich, more secure, less buggy and more standards complient than any other browser.

I've repeatedly looked at Firefox over the years as people tell me its gotten better... and it still falls short, plus its user interface sucks when tried side-by-side with Opera.

Firefox's standard's compliance is, well, questionable. It fails too often in that regard.

Not according to things i've seen, Opera and Firefox are about tied with compliance, firefox leading in some areas, Opera in the other. Most people I know have tried opera at one time or another, but ended up going back to firefox. While its true that it is the most secure, it also has one of the lowest userbases, and firefox cannot be touched with features with extensions. But I do give opera that it is faster and smaller, and the UI is very good as well. But I wouldn't say the Firefox UI sucks compared to it

"with extensions"

Many of those features are included in Opera without extensions. And some of those extensions have privacy issues.

I use several browsers as part of my work on a daily basis. One thing I've come to learn is there are some Firefox users who are like Evangelical Christians: once converted they will never accept anything which contradicts their new religion even when facts prove them to be wrong. I've switched primary browsers 3 times over the past 13 years on the web. I've yet to have a compelling reason to switch to Firefox.

Its a fact that Opera is the strictest browser when it comes to W3C compliance. Its not a matter of "Firefox is leading in some areas, Opera in the other." The fact is Opera passes a larger number of W3C compliance tests than both Firefox and IE. I have the least amount of trouble getting things to render properly on it compared to Firefox and IE. Firefox 2.x can't even pass the Acid2 test:

http://www.webstandards.org/files/acid2/test.html#top

Try it in Opera, IE and Firefox. Guess which one is the only browser to pass.

Many people do not know know about all the neat little widgets built into Opera interface because they're so used to interfaces like IE and Firefox and therefore don't look for them. Click on the left window bar in Opera and watch what happens. Look at what the tabbed interface can do which the others can't (some of its dragging capabilities are second to none). Click and right click everywhere you go in Opera... lots of hidden gems to be found.

I will give you the point that Firefox has a lot of extensions. Then again, it needs them in order to catch up. I will also concede that Firefox has gotten better over the years as they've copied more Opera features (and the users then often claimed they came up with it first!).

Opera is good, like I said, but its not the end all of browsers. There is not really a best browser.

But opera users always seem to bring up the Acid 2 test, I have not seen it cause rendering issues on any pages that I have seen so far. The FF3.0 Alphas also pass the test with flying colors mind you, and FINALLY they introduce image zooming as well

You can to go into the settings and change the icon sizes, or remove them completely -- as well as drag and drop any icons you want, or don't want, or buttons you create as short-cuts.

I use FireFox mainly because that is what I'm used to. At work, my computer runs Linux, so no IE on that one. I got so used to firefox at work, I put it on my home pc. I never have any problems with exploits, but I realize that is because of safe web habits, not a better browser. I have used Opera a few times, but never gave it a chance. I guess I'm going to play with it now and see if it works out better for me. I'm always open to try something different. If not, I'd be posting this from a dos box.
