My truck brought up a P-1299 code. So i change the water temp sen to the computer. new thermostat, new fluid. Seemed to work for a day. Then on the way to work the heat goes away the temp gauge goes to high and the oil light comes on for about 30 secs. then everything goes back to norm. Confused?
What model year, model, engine, and transmission do you have. Truck details are very helpful when it comes to helping you with your questions. Good luck!
Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1299 indicates an engine overheat condition was detected by the cylinder head temperature (CHT) sensor. An FMEM Strategy called Failsafe Cooling was activated to cool the engine. (Refer to Section 1A, «Electronic Engine Control (EC) System», for more information on Failsafe Cooling Strategy and the cylinder head temperature sensor.)
Possible causes:
-- Engine cooling system concerns.
-- Base engine concerns.
-- Low engine coolant level or loss of coolant.
l Check engine coolant level.
l Is the engine coolant level fill correct?
Yes
GO to the Powertrain/Engine Group, Engine Cooling System Section in the Workshop Manual for symptom, Engine Overheats.
No
GO to the Powertrain/Engine Group, Engine Cooling System Section in the Workshop Manual for symptom, Loss of Engine Coolant.
When the truck give the code I read it with a scanner. So I replaced the coolant sensor to the computer, installed a new thermostat and coolant. I will check the levels. Thanks for the help!

Project; I have had 2 different scanners on it when it read P-1299 they both said something to do with air monoriting. I do not have access to any manuals.
Gentlemen; When My 97 F150 4.6v-8 4X4 issues a p-1299 code it does not say anything about overheating it says somthing about air metering. Here is what the truck does. From a cold startup about 2 to 3 miles the temp gauge will come up quicker than norm. It will show at norm operating temp, then it will start do drop. The oil temp light will come on then the water temp gauge will go strait to high temp in the red for about 30 secs. burp the fill tank and then go back to norm.It will not do it after you have drivin for a little bit.I have replaced the water pump, thermostat, coolent and the water temp sensor to the computer.I have also notice the gas mileage decreasing. Thanks for Your Help.

If you're getting an P1299 fault code, then the description presented by the scanner(s) is erroneous. I've given the Ford definition that is specific to YOUR truck, not a generic description.
I'd be suspicious you have a faulty head gasket. A test for exhaust gasses in the coolant would be worthwhile to either verify or rule out this as a possibility. If your mechanic has an exhaust gas analyzer, he can hold the probe above the open radiator neck, run the engine at 1500 RPMs, and see if the sniffer picks up anything. If you used any type of radiator flushing agent, be sure to tell him first as the petroleum in these products will give a false positive.
Alternatively, you can go by any local NAPA store and purchase a block tester kit. About $50 - part number 700-1006.
Please avoid starting a new thread as a continuation for the same issue. Keep everything in one place.
