Coolant Filter

I have been reading articals re the installation of by-pass coolant filters.
I don't recall ever seeing any comments pretaining to this mod and was wondering if any of of youse guys are running this filter?

The articals make sense as to the positive results by removing abrassive particals etc as well as maintaining the SCA levels.

Any comments positive or negative are welcome.
Roger

Some have them and alot don't. You would be supprised at the amount of stuff that they remove. I know that you can get the filters (with or without SCA pre-charge) bases, and fittings from NAPA. Not very hard to install.

I installed one on my 95. I put it on after a really good flushing of the system with 180K on the truck and every time I changed the filter it came out spotless. So I have not been in a hurry to put one on my 97. I think with good flushing it might be pointless. I have also run out of room in my engine compartment. here are install pics from my 95. The base is from Napa. Plumbing- supply came from heater hose and returned into the 3/8 deguass bottle line. Can't remember if my pics show that or not as it was a mid run change in plumbing.

Reguarding the coolant filter, I need to replace my waterpump and I've heard that the IH water pumps have an additional port in them for a line to a filter. Can anyone shed some light on this and how it would get hooked up. Thanks

The only ones that I have seen (again "that I have seen" and I have not seen them all) is an IH pump that has a built in filter mount where the filter screws onto (like an oil filter).

Maybe that is what I'm referring to plowhand. The way I heard it described once it sounded like a hose with a remote filter, but mabey it is just a filter on the pump. Any advantages to this over buying just a normal bypass filter kit?

If you have to replace the pump anyway, I would check the price difference on the two pumps and then the price of everything needed to install the bypass filter and add that to the price of the pump without the filter. See which way is cheaper.

Also a note: I have only seen these pumps with filters on medium duty trucks, I don't know if there any kind of clearance issues with them on our trucks. So I would want to look at the pump to make sure before I bought it.

But with that said, with the filter on the pump, you would just have to install the pump, screw on the filter and your done. No hoses to run, no finding a place to mount the filter base, etc.

Let us know which way you go and how it comes out, prices, clearance etc. Good Luck.
