blk smoke

I tried the search first with no luck for idi....my 87 w/ 218,000 puts out a steady black haze visible for about 2 ft coming out of the exhaust going down the Interstate at 55 to 60.....I know these are suppose to smoke some but can/should I tune the pump to reduce ?Also, I notice that going down the road as it gets lower in fuel (tank) it seems to sometimes want to surge and really take off....Am I missing out on performance?....should it be that peppy all the time?..man I like this old truck....

That smoke is normal for a NA engine, some of us with turbo's have that much or more.

As for the surging, what you are probably seeing is air being sucked into the fuel pickup tube.
After it goes through the IP, the air changes how much fuel is injected since the pressure in the injection line drops slower than it would if it was all fuel.

It is common for the bottom end of the fuel pickup to break off or crack on high mileage trucks.
When it falls off, you can run out of fuel somewhere between 1/4 and 1/2 tank of fuel.
Many have pulled out the fuel pickup and replaced the plastic end with a piece of fuel line.
Do cut the bottom end on an angle so it don't get sucked against the bottom of the tank though.

Dave, if I do as you say, 1. How do I keep the end of the new fuel line in the bottom of the tank. Do I need to install some kind of weight on it? 2. Do they still sell a filter to go over the fuel pickup line? Mine was in pieces when I took it out. I want to put some kind of filter on the end to keep the crap out of my line.

Since the fuel line is rather stiff and the suction line goes straight down, the fuel line will stay down by it's self.

As for the filter, the engine mounted filter is enough.
I use a bit of care while fueling, no need to be in a hurry and let water or dirt get in a place you really don't want it anyway.

The metal portion of my pickup line does not go straight down. It runs at an approx 45 deg angle to the bottom of the tank so I am afraid the rubber portion will flop around. The pickup filter was about 2" diameter and had a 45 deg nipple to the steel line. One more question. The replacement fuel line I purchased from Advance Auto says SAE30R6KX. I can not determine if it is nitrile or just plain rubber. I run Bio in my rig and I don't want it to deteriorate. Thanks Dave
