Truck has been starting a little slow lately, so I cleaned the battery posts and it seems to have helped. It got me thinking about if I were to get stranded and needed a jump that I had heard somewhere that you need to be careful which battery you use for the jump. They are wired in parallel so what difference would it make? Does it make a difference?
no it would not, but closer the battery is to the starter the better, so id say passenger side, but other than that wont make any diference,
if you know you batteries are good, and still cranks slow it might be you starter failing , i had the same thing, put the new batteries in and it would not turn over the next morning, than it would, replaced starter and its running like champ since,
check the voltage on the batteries while cranking, if it gets to around 10v might be the problem
If you get stranded and need a jump start, you are going to need a vehicle with a very strong battery. Had an ambulance at work last week that the driver left his master switch on and ran the batteries down. Several of the security vehicles tried, finally called me, I had to hook both batteries up using two cables to get him started. That was a newer 6.0. If you think you have some weak batteries, do yourself a favor and replace them, both of them.
Thanks guys, I didn't think it would matter. Batteries are 12.6v and 12.7v with the meter before start and the gauge stays above the line at startup. I'm pretty sure it was just the dirty terminals. Don't really know why the were so corroded though. I'll have to keep an eye on them.
I have to clean my terminals religiously, I try to do it every 3 months or so.
Back when I was having GPR cold start issues, the only successful jumpstart I got was from a superduty which happened to have two batteries..using two sets of cables. Single battery wouldn't cut it.
I think using a battery hydrometer.. (napa sell one for about $20) and checking each cell is a good method of determining if your battery is good.. Last month i checked mine and found each battery had a bad reading on one cell.. But, i am not complaining since the batteries were original. and lasted 9 years on the Motorcraft.. Running on new batteries now and she starts must faster..
Hmmm, how old are your batteries?
Still factory original? Your 2000 M.Y. truck will now have 8 year old batteries installed. They had to be made before the truck was built, so the extra year.
I put in a set about a year ago .. you can tell they do leak / fume because of the repeated needed cleaning, like Smokin' set. One of my next upgrades is going to dual Optimal yellow's

My owner's manual for my early '99 says to jump from passenger side only!! (Actually says "DO NOT jump start from driver's side or frame mounted battery".)

Reason: Incomplete
If you are getting dirty post connections the post seals have failed. Get the chemically treated felts and place them around the post under the connectors. This will keep the corrosion at a minimum and buy you more time on that set of batteries.

I have heard stories of long lasting batteries but other than one mower battery that lasted over five years have never gotten over 4yrs mostly 2 to 3

I recently replaced the battery in my wife's Cougar... the original Motorcraft lastest 10 years..The battery cells were still good but the main positive lug just plain fell off !!...I guess i am lucky..
Kwik: My batteries are about 4 years old. I guess the clean terminals didn't do it as she almost didnt start again today. Guess I will just get a new set this weekend.
Calli:I'll bet that is where I read it. So what does that mean?
