I'm getting ready to tear down my 390 for a post-wreck inspection. While I'm in there I'm going to decide if it's going right back together or if it's going to sit while I collect a decent chunk of money to make it what I really want it to be.
Something I've been kicking around is going roller cam since I'm nearly positive one of my cam lobes was eating itself just prior to it being parked. I was wondering if anyone knew of a company making street roller cams for FE's. I've found one by crane, but just the cam goes for $400. I'm only looking to hit 5200-5500 RPM and all of the other FE roller cams I can find are all drag race/light car only.
I know about the oil issues, i've been running rotella HD. I'm not blaming it on the oil, it's a matter of I don't know how many miles the cam and lifters have on them. the rest of the motor i guarantee is under 5,000 since the PO built it, but the cam has Ford casting numbers on it.
I'm looking to go roller for the increased vacuum signal, decreased friction, no cam break in, and the ability to swap cams whenever i want. i just don't want to be spending $400 on a camshaft. I'd drop $250, but 400 is just over the top.
That's why i'm asking if any other companies make hydro roller cams for a FE. I know the lifters are expensive and I don't mind that. It's the cam itself that i'm not thrilled about.
I'm not looking to cheap out on this motor, but I am on a budget. $250 for a cam would be in there even with the expense of lifters.
From past experience, aftermarket roller lifters are NOT high mileage items. Now, maybe if you don't have a large cam/big springs they last longer? I've heard way too many catastrophes from roller lifters coming apart(ie: axles/wheels breaking).
Check around at swap meets, but likely you'll only find big race cams for cheap. Don't think you'll find any NEW roller cams for an FE cheap no matter how "small" it is.
