Tranny options

I have somewhat looked into this in the past, and I asked about it in the transmission section but did not get much information so I thought I'd ask about it here in my home forum.

I have an 81 with a 300 and an automatic 3 speed tranny. I have already modded the engine plenty, and now I want to look at swapping trannys and possibly rearend.

I'm not sure what my gears are in the back, but my question is what is the ideal combination of an automatic transmission and rearend gears for use with the 300 . I hear manual swaps are too complicated, though I would do it if it were possible.

my goal is obviously lots of low end torque (reason I have the 300). I think I'm losing significant amounts of power in the 3 speed.

If you've the standard C-4, you could go w/ a Gear Venders add-on O.D./splitter set up.

It takes the place of your standard Tailstock Housing where its 'Puter Controled Under/Over Drive system resides. It gives you 6 foreword Gears & 2 reverse gears.

Here's a Link that give a complete explination.

WOW that is a great big huge picture... nice too!

I would have to suggest a C-6 with the overdrive unit
or AOD (?) with 3.73 or 4.10 gears out back.

BTW I have a '78 F350 dually with 4-spd and 4.10 gears
Pulls like a tractor (good!) accelerates like a sports car (great)
definitely needs an O.D. though... 60 mph TOPS!

I'd not suggest the AOD, because unless you spend a Large Chunk of Rhino to work out all the built in problems w/ it, you'll just have wasted you money.

WoomaHodal, Too bad you don't have a truck manual transmission.

Advance adapters makes a unit that goes between the engine/bell housing and the trans.

I have one in my '81 F150 4.9L T-18.

It's an Advance Adapters "Ranger Torque Splitter".

Technically, I have 8 speeds forward and 2 reverse.

Kind of fun to drive.

I can split any gear; kind of like an overdrive, for each gear.

So I take it from your statement that they don't have anything tht'd work on an Auto Trans.

I don't think Advance Adapters does, but Gear Vendors does, as you posted.

Man, that's a big picture; almost as big as the real thing.

The Advance Adapters Ranger Torque Splitters are offered either in 27% overdrive and 17% underdrive units.

That was my initial reaction also, when I saw those prices.

Luckily, I bought my Advance Adapters unit back in '84 or '85.
