I have 2 problems with my 91 f350 diesel. The speedometer just quite and the tach has' t worked since I bought it. I need to know how hard is it to change the speedo gear if that is the problem I think I can handle it if it is just the cable but I know my luck. I also need to know where the tach sensor is on this one. It is the interational 7.3 diesel with manual tranny. thanks todd
The engines were avalable with or without the tach sensor on the IP drive gear housing.
Its possible that some one may have swapped the cluster from another truck that did have a tach setup, or maybe an engine form one that didn't.
1991 should have a cable driven speedo, so its all mechanical. Check both ends of the speedo cable and see if its still in one piece or if its just poped out at one end.
Thanks guys, I must have a motor change as I find the the connector on the wire harness but no place for sensor. Can I change covers with one that has sensor , but probally I don't have pickup on the ip pump chain or gear right. oh well who needs a tach thanks again Todd

Actually, I think the sensor uses the IP gear as the magnetic pickup, so all you would need is to swap the gear housing and buy (get) a new sensor.
You can swap the drive gear housing.
But do be aware that you need to remove the IP first.
Then remove the housing.
When you remove the housing, be carefull that you do not unmesh the IP drive gear from the cam drive gear.
If the gears are seperated, you could have issues getting it back in time since the timing marks are not visible without removing the water pump and the timing gear cover plate, which is a lot more work.
Sensor is easy to locate. That is a standard " common" thread in the housing for the sensor and the sensor is a basic ac generating sensor. If you have a parts store for a bigtruck near you can pick up a VSS sensor that is threaded and use it. Screw it in till it touches then back it out 1/4 to 1/2 turn. Wire it up and go. You have other options if you can't find the OE sensor.
