It lives

So after replacing my timing chain cover and harmonic balancer my 1990 250 5.8L EFI is now running though roughly. I'll change cap, rotor and plugs to start with. Is there anything else that would quiet this beast down? It feels like it is missing on a cylinder.

It's possible the timing marks were not lined up. Does it run rougher than it did before you changed the timing set? If there was alot of slack in the old timing set, you probably had to rotate the crank just a little to get the new set on. Could be that the cam is off 1 tooth in relation to the crank.

I don't think that's an issue as the timing chain was never removed so the timing didn't change. The origional issue was the harmonic balancer that came apart. My son drove it like that and the metal ring on the balancer broke through the timing chain cover.

My bad. I read right through the word cover. Early, you know. Does that motor have a crank position sensor?

Theres a lot of things that could be causing this truck to run rough, so that's a tough call. If you have any clues as to when it started or other related symptoms then we can take it from there. I'd get that tune-up taken care of first thing, that might even fix the problem.

It runs rough, how old are the plugs, wires, cap rotor? What brand? Are they still dated the model year of the truck? Use only high quality parts, motorcraft wires, $30 gp sorensen (Advance Auto) or napa premium line (around the same price) cap and rotor. ONLY motorcraft COPPER plugs, the platinums do not work well with the older ignition systems. From there double check the firing order, and wire routing. I made the mistake of crossing two plug wires on my 302. It ran but had a dead cylinder. Found the problem, and swapped it back to where it should be and it smoothed out like glass.

Any codes??? If not, and it still runs rough after replacing all the tune up parts, the only things I can think of to do next would be a compression test (matter of fact you should just do that when you take the old spark plugs out) and replace/clean/rebuild the fuel injectors...I would just replace with Ford parts but some like to cut costs.

Put in the cap, rotor, wires, and plugs. That has pretty much taken care of the rough running. One spark plug was burnt and one wire was melted through. Does the O2 sensor do much on this thing? If it does I should change that as well.

In closed loop, it does plenty.
