I've got a '68 2wd. I've had two seperate 460/ c6 combos in the truck. The truck had always shifted wierd. 1) In "DRIVE" pulling away from a stop, it will shift up, 1-2, then 2-3 before I'm even across the intersection, so I usually manually up shift it. 2) I can't manually downshift 3-2, only 3-1. My old c6 was like this , and I figured it was worn out. My new c6 is the exact same way! I thought it might be because neither trans had the downshift linkage from the carb to the trans. I installed it today, and nothing changed, except if I floor it, it will now downshift (passing gear). Please give me some tips.
Your govenor is stopped up w/ trash. I have the same prob with my C6, i just haven't had time to get in there and disassemble and clean out mine. Just pull your driveshaft (make sure and mark your yokes for proper alignment if it's a two piece!!!!!!!!!and don't ask why i say!!!!) Then remove tailshaft housing to gain access to govenor which is part of the output shaft itself. I haven't done mine yet so i cannot give you details on how to go any further but C6's are about as basic as they come. A factory ford drivetrain manual is always a great asset as well in doing such a project. Let us know.
Right and so is mine but I never disassembled my governor when I rebuilt mine. Why would I? I had no reason too until i noticed it's funky shifting after running it. If I'm ASE certified and can do it, then who says the ASE certified Jasper guy can't do it? Instead of reading your governor, your transmission is simply going off of hydraulic pressure. Thats how older tranny's work. Theres no ECU to get info to/from to say when or when not to shift so it has two options- governor on tailshaft which reads the speed of the vehicle since theres no VSS or hydraulics. And I know someones gonna say "what about the modulator valve??" That is for tuning in your shift pattern. Sooner or later. If you unlplug your modulator your trans will still shift off hydraulic pressure. It won't shift right at all and may not even make it into 3rd but it will get out of first. The tranny determins its gear by using those for info unless the driver says otherwise w/ either his foot or the column.
Now that you mentioned it, I did have to swap the tailshaft from my old c6 into my new c6 after it was rebuilt. I left the governor on the old shaft when I put it in the new trans, so if it was full of crud, it still is! I'll pull off the tail stock, and install the governor that was on the shaft that went through the rebuild. Hopefully it works, thanks!
No problemo. It always takes my brain a bit of priming before it kicks in too. Lemme know whatcha get into w/ your governor so I know when I get into mine. I think you can just take them apart and clean them but I did talk to my tranny guy and he said they have kits for them to replace some parts in them. Lemme know.
I'll be into it tomorrow. I'm going to play with the downshift linkage, and the modulator (mine supposedly has a lighter spring?). If I have time, I'll take off the tail stock. I'll post back what ever happens.
