went from one code with an engine light to another without
Had an engine lean code in my computer. Fixed a leaky exhaust manifold and cat.
Reset the light.
Comes back on after a few miles. This time an o2 sensor.
After a few days, the engine light just went off.
The thing of it is, the code is still in there. I had it scanned by the garage that's going to do my inspection here soon. And he showed me it's still in there.
Why would an engine light go out if the code is still in there?
Should I try to erase the code as i did before with the battery or just leave it. I imagine I should just replace the sensor, but I would like to know for sure that it's bad.
Thanks for any help you guys could be.

It may be a hard code, one that doesn't go away on it's own. You have fixed the problem, but the code is still stored. Try resetting the PCM, either with a tuner or by disconnecting the battery for a while.
...and it may currently be a "pending" code which has not yet met the parameters for turning on the CEL/MIL/SES light.
Before replacing anything, post the exact fault code. Many O2-related codes are NOT due to the sensor being faulty.
For your vehicle, reset the computer by pulling the 3 or 5 A fuse in the little fuse box under the hood for 15 minutes. Leave the battery alone and you won't have to reprogram your radio settings.
Besides, it's probably that orange paint, anyways....
After a certain number of cold-soak restarts without a fault, the light resets. I think it's 3, at least it was back in '96-97.
I had an evap system fault on my '96 t-bird 4.6L, and after three cold starts the light went off. The Ford dealer was still able to retrieve the codes and repair it (without the codes, they'd have been clueless).
Well, thank you for all your info. I hooked up a scanner and rechecked the codes.(P1036). It had one in the memory and one that said 'pending'
I have erased the codes now and will wait and hope that all is well. But thank you again....
Are you sure the new code is P1036. I do not see this as a Ford code. As for the O2 code it may be related to whatever you did to the cat. When a cat is changed or removed you will get an 02 sensor fault shortly after the change. after the truck retrains for the mod you can reset the code and it will go away.
This code was pulled from an Advance Auto Parts scanner. I have actually called the local ford dealer and they could not find it either. I have not modified the cat at all. All I did was seal the leaks between the manifold and the cat. I'm replacing the sensor soon because now the light has come back on. We'll see what happens.
