I just put a rebuilt alternator on my 1990 f-150 with the 302 and have afully charged battery and noticed the alternator really gets hot to the touch when running, is that right?
They seem to get pretty hot especially with the lights, a/c, etc on. As long as it is not over 160 deg or so I wouldn't worry.
Might be a good excuse to buy a inferred thermometer.
Well, yeah they get hot...the bracket is attached to the motor for one thing and that transfers heat but the alternator itself is spinning inside and like any electric motor get's hot to the touch. Be really careful if your reaching in and touching it while it's running, because I have known experienced mechanics who have lost the tip of their fingers on the blades of a spinning alternator. The fan blades become almost invisible when it's running and accidents can happen.
Unless the alternator guage is showing it charging past 14 or 15 volts it should be functioning properly.
Today while going to get the paper the gauge on the truck dropped and the light came on the dash made it home to find the altanator crapped out thays what I get from a rebuilt unit from auto zone i guess?Does this happenen often with these?
i had 2 bad ones in a row from autozone. they ended up paying for a new one at o'reilly. i made $20 off the deal, they went at got it for me while i waited, and i got a $50 gift card.
Dobz, go back to autozone and either demand your money back or settle on another unit, and another, and another, until you get one that works.
In the future, it is a good rule of thumb to only buy non-truck specific or brand name parts from places like auto zone, kragen, etc., like electrical supplies, oil, accessories, etc. Generally speaking, your best bet is ALWAYS to use Motorcraft parts when you can. There are places online where you can get Motorcraft parts at a cheaper price than the dealer, such as rockauto.com
