I recently installed the 6637 but there is a noise that i'm kind of concerned about. When running up through the gears (E40D?) i get the normal "whoosh" of excess boost exiting through the filter but in my last gear under acceleration, the "whoosh" doesn't really seem to stop. Unloaded the truck seems to run fine, but when pulling my boat it really struggles to stay at 65-70 so i'm wondering if there is a waste gate that is not fully closing. I did not notice it before the 6637 but that thing really amplifies air filter/turbo noises, especially under acceleration so i'm wondering if there is some wastegate linkage i need to check or what. I have checked all the boots and all seems tight. I'm pretty new to diesel engines so i may talking complete nonsense right now but any input is appreciated. thanks guys!!
Make sure that the exhaust backpressure valve is adjusted correctly. The butterfly valve should be fully closed when 10lbs of force is applied. The adjustment is with the actuator rod. Lenghten or shorten the rod accordingly. Hope this helps.
It's on the turbo..The adjustment can be done with the turbo installed. You'll need a spring gauge.
Remove the charge air cooler inlet/outlet ducts from the compressor manifold.
Disconnect the exhaust outlet pipe from the turbo and pull away from the EBPV.
Disconnect the EBPV: Remove the retaining clip and disconnect the actuator rod from the valve.
Remove the six bolts and the valve
The butterfly valve should be fully closed when 10 pounds of force is applied.
Adjust the rod accordingly.
Hope this helps
Are you hearing a whoosh or a hiss? A whoosh sound through the intake is a good thing. A hissing sound through the exhaust when the truck is fully warmed up is a bad thing. The EBPV needs to be open for normal performance. It's the wastegate you want closed.
I am experiencing what I believe sounds like the exact symptoms when pulling my 9000 lb TT. After it lets out the big whooosh there is a continual hiss from what sounds like the filter. It is always there when under load. As soon as you let up even a little on the go pedal the hiss stops. Kind of a shshshshshshsh. All boots tight. Boost never gets over 16 lbs.
I've got exactly what DieselCamper01 is talking about...only i don't even have to be loaded...just when under moderate acceleration and shifting into my last gear...
