Spiral Lock Retainers

Need opinions. During the course of machining the block and balancing the crankshaft my machine shop lost the spiral locks that came with my Silvolite 1130s. They installed standard snap rings and these look fine, BUT, I'm picky and kind of had my heart set on the spiral locks. So am I worrying over nothing? Will the snap ring retainers be okay? Should I get another set of spiral locks? The shop will replace them for free and the Guy was really sorry, and I don't want to be a PITA. So should I assemble this motor with the standard retainers or?

Spiral Lock Retainers

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Oct-02 AT 10:34 AM (EST)]I have no direct hands-on experience with that, but I seem to remember reading that the spiros had an advantage in how they put stress on the retaining grove. As the beveled piston pin pushes out, it also pushes the spiro clip deepeer into the groove. The standard c-clip just pushes straight out which wouldn't be as strong. There are also clearance issues. If the pin length is designed of one would it work with the other? I think these were high rpm issues. It's from my fuzzy memory of an article or book I read on BBC or SBC engines, but sometimes things carry over the Ford FE engines.

I'm sure the guys with hands-on FE experience in that area can fill you in better.

I used the standard c-clips that came with my TRW pistons. They haven't failed me yet. Just be sure to put the beveled side of the ring up against the pin and the cornered side towards the outside. That is where most c-clips fail.

Please ignore my earlier comments. When I wrote my earlier note I was confusing round wire retainers with Spirolox retainers. I just looked it up in the Brand X Power Manual.

I e-mailed the tech support for silvolite pistons and they said to use the spirolox. So I will get another set.
