I think allwthrrider is right. A VERY good mechanic friend of mine recently told me of an engine in his fleet that grenaded itself because it would not hold time. Turned out that the distributor was worn out. He told me he could grab the dist shaft and it was tight in some directions, but not in others. Grab it, and try to move it in all directions. If it moves, there's your problem.
You Might not even be able to move it enough by hand to tell,On my 390 my timing was jumping around from 12 deg btdc to 2 deg after but it all seemed normal. Only after changing the whole thing did it stay put
