i put a new rear u joint in along with teh 2 behind the transfer case, i drove around the block and went to pull in the drive way and i heard a loud BANG!......and the whole truck shook, so i jump out and my driveline is laying on the ground and there are pieces of u joint everywhere, the end caps snapped off along with this thing.....what is it and how much am i looking at??? the worst part is that that piece in the picture, broke on my buddy when he was using my truck before but i have no way of contacting him about what it was called
It's called a Pinion Yoke. You are looking at about $100 give or take depending on what kind of rear end you have if you replace it yourself. Replace the yoke, just as well replace the pinon seal.
go to 73-79fordtrucks.com i got 2 for my 76 250 for 105 with shipping. also what he said drive line angle...im turning 53 inch tractor tires and break them only every 4 events mudruns but i run it hard
oh yeah sorry its a 9", and the pinion angle is good ive had it looked at multiple times at 4 wheel performance and offroad industries and they said that the angle is excellent. the neighbor said i might need to get a "strong one" i have a 351m,rods,pistons, cam, bigger valves, intake mani. a 750cfm edelbrock carb. but i dont think its some ungodly amount of power. i cant figure out why it did so much damage, my moms blazer used to drop drivelines ever so often from the wrong angle, but it would just drop the driveline and we would need a new u joint
oh im only turning 35x14.5x15 boggers
looks like a bind break with the wheels off the ground and you spin tires does it bind any. ujoint looks brand new from pic. and if it was bad joint then that caps or atleast one would stay in the straps
no it spins freely just grab a tire and it turns, i dont do burnouts.i just was pulling in and gave it a quick tap on the gas pedal and it just snapped, it sounded awful
when you get a new yoke hold the brake and give a lil gas if you rear end tweaks then you need ladder/trac bars those look like 4-6 inch blocks so if true then thats problem
what quality u joint did you put in? ive snapped a few joints and straps pushing 38 boggers, but that can be expected with over sized tires. when you tightened the straps, did you ensure that both nuts are tight, with equal amount of torque? and did it break the actual yoke or the strap. its still hard to tell by the pic....
i dont know what kind of u joints they were my step brother picked them up from carquest, then i put the truck in drive the rear end twist upwards i know that, and when you put it in park it lowers back to normal, ya we torqued them down to the spec i printed out., and ya it broke the yoke 1/4 of the yoke off clean stuff went everywhere bearing needles and caps and the driveline it was a mess
