Ive been pondering the idea of making a HP9" front axle. I have set of complete axles from a 78 ronco. I havent done any measurements yet but have been wondering if it is even plausible. I was thinking of extracting the axle tubes, c's, knuckles, and hubs from the d44 and mounting them on the 9" pumpkin and centersection. The only issue I could foresee is the axleshafts would have to be custom made. And also buying the hp center section. Lemme kno what you think.
thanks for the response.
the reason i would go this route is to save money since i have the parts. a d60 to mount in a 79 150 would be very costly. but considering the cost of hi9, it would make it a toss up. but the truck is already front heavy, and putting a d60 in it would be adding more lbs. the 9" is alot stronger than the stock d44 and almost as strong a d60. I could keep it low pinion to save costs, though. I have the parts laying around for the last 5 yrs and was looking for another project as i did my rear disc conversion to the rear 9" last week. I was curious if i can re-spline the d44 axles to 31 spline to fit the 9" carrier or modify the spider gears to accomodate the the d44 axles. but im thinkin of a custom made set.
yea, i just thought of it....the carrier for the 9" is 28 spline. but perhaps it can be cut/splined down...if i was going to do it, id get a set of reversed cut gears and keep it hi pinion, just for strength. I think it would hold up better than the d44 i have in there. although im not runnin it with 38 boggers anymore and use it on the street more than anything(except racin quads in the sandpits.). I think the ony diff with a hi9 center and regular is a oil slinger/passage thing. the ring gear may not be able to bring enough oil to the spiders/pinion bearings w/o it.
yea i already checked them out to see how much the gears will cost me. I would have to contact them to see if they sell the slinger seperate. Im sure they could build a whole axle for me, but i would like to take a swing at it. I just dont have the 3g's++ to throw at my truck and i were to spend that much, i might as well spend the extra 2g's for the dynatrac d60. *Im not cheap, just resourceful.*
and i do see where they state that can take 400 horses and 37" tires. i run slightly smaller tires and my engine puts out 365 hp and 485 ft/lbs stock.
