429 water pump question

429 water pump question
I have just put togeter a 429 to go in my 68 4x4 and i realized I did not put the back plate (in between timing cover & water pump) to the water pump on, do I need to pull it off and put that in before I try to fire it up?

If you're missing the back plate it will over heat because the water pump wont be able to push the coolant. The back plate is kind of like a fan shroud for the radiator. It helps to channel the flow.
