My friend, whom bought my truck, has been have some poor mpg problems (11mpg daily) He fills at the same station every time, changes his fluids regularly etc. I told him it sounded like maybe he had a boost leak somewhere. So, he tested the manifold pressure and came up with 14.94-15.52psi max at wot. It that normal? I thought the pressure should be around 18-20psi, but I'm not diesel expert! the truck has just under 160k, all the boost pipes are secured and there is no oil in the pipes. He's going to look at the impeller wheel this weekend and let me know if it looks rough. He recently replaced the PCM, glow plugs, and all the seals and ball joints in the front axle due to other issues but he was getting poor mpg before that. What should I have him look for next? Is it maybe time for a turbo rebuild? He did pull the K&N drop in out and said it was absolutely caked with gunk so he replaced it but it didn't improve anything.
are the up pipes leaking???..check the turbo wheel for any play and dusting..if it looks good..it might be worth checking the EBPS tube going to the passenger side exhaust manifold..they are good for building up with soot..they also rust and get little pin holes in them as well..
Thanks, i'll have him take a look at the EBPS. He said he checked all the boost pipes to the IC and from the IC back to teh engine and they were all good.

the up pipes come from both exhaust manifolds and go to the back of the turbo..at the turbo the pipes are held in with donut gaskets that are good for leaking....look behind the turbo and see if you can see any soot on the pipes or fire wall.run your hands along the pipe where you cant see.. your hands should be clean..if there black you have a leak..
ahh.. gotcha! I actually made him an account and told him to come on here and post. This way he's not explaining his findings to me over the phone in Iraq, and then me explaining them to you. His screen name will be 2kcrewcab2. Thanks for all the help! He's getting frustrated because it doesn't pull like he wants and he keeps threatening the "D" word! DODGE!!!!!!!!! I've been trying to explain to him that there is somehting wrong with the truck that is causing the poor mpg and that a dodge isn't going to be much better if any at pulling a trailer once he gets the truck repaired.
Ok I checked the turbine wheel and it is in fact dusted it looks like it has been sand blasted on the leading edge but little pitting and no gouges.
The play is minimal I think it has if I was guessing any were from 1 to 2 thousands of play. It has no play In or Out and I wouldnt think that it wouldnt be to much play moving side to side were the little bit of movement is. I tryed to looked for exhaust sooting and from the top and from bottom and with my hand I came up with nothing. Now the EBPS line not knowing what I was in fact looking for other than a line off of the right manifold I think it is possibly the line that runs from just under the turbo in the back but it looks like it goes into the head and there is another line on the front left head that they both run to the side of the fuel heater/bowl.
Were is the line at on the manifold middle to back or front? And when i take it off will I be able to apply air preasure to it with out screwing anything other than the line up?
The EBPS line is a hard pipe that starts just in front of and below the HPOP, and goes to the passenger side exhaust manifold. Search the term for a pic, and the sensor plugs into the top of this tube. At 11 mpg i would search elsewhere than the EBPS more like the up pipes as described above. Also the two orange boots under your turbo check those.
What other info on the truck can you provide? Mods? Tuners?
If its a Dually with a 4:10 Rear end that might be the biggest issue
The truck has never been chipped or tuned. It had the kwik filter on it at one point but he ended up taking it off and putting the stock box back on. The muffler was deleted, leveling kit, and that's it!
