I've got a 72 F100 and have taken off body so i can switch brakes, body mounts and remove and replace the rust to paint. I was wanting to know if i use that 3 part prime, encapsulate, seal from Eastwood would i have to sand blast the chassis first or degrease it with degreaser and pressurer washer. I'm new to this and just want it to be black and not have it rusty looking when i replace body. If i have to sand blast it what would i use? Is Aluminum Oxide 60 or 90 better than Ground Glass 40/70? I have a 50lb gravity feed blaster. Like i said i'm new and could use some advice. Thanks
I would pressure wash everything first, then use an engine cleaner type solution or kerosine to remove all grease and oil and pressure wash again, then wash the whole thing again with dish detergent/water to finalize the removal of oil and grease.
Then do the sandblasting, preferences of the type of material to use for sand blasting is up to you because your doing a frame and not the body panels and frames are a rough surface to begin with even before any rust issues.
I personaly dont beleive ANY of those coatings to claim painting over ANY rust be it small or major to last long at all.
Common sense will tell you that any kind of coating over rust is just coating over rust and hiding it temporarily, rust of any stage is only laying on the metal and not adhered to it,your just putting a coating over top of the rust and not adhering to the metal AT ALL and frames flex all the time and the coating WILL crack and flake off in due time, most of the time in a short time.
Your post shows youron the right track already,go with it.
The reason for degreasing before sandblasting is sandblasting will just spread the grease around and making the sand blasting process a P.I.TA.
Well, the absolute best would be to have it blasted and powdercoated. I haven't used the eastwood stuff, but would assume it is pretty good. I used POR15 and didn't have that good of luck on the stuff I put it on, but others have. My personal best luck is with rustoleum red metal primer and paint. I wire wheel stuff, use naval jelly and wash with dish soap. Then prime and paint.
Sorry I can't help you with the eastwood stuff, but hopefully this will give you ideas. The most important thing with ANY product is to follow the directions.
I'm doing the same to my truck. I pressure washed and used 3M abrassive wheels to get down to bare metal (check out my gallery) Afterwards, I used Eastwoods rust encapsulator and semi gloss chassis black top coat (no pictures yet) I was quite satisfied with the whole thing. It has been garaged and not driven yet so I can't say how it will hold up
