i posted a while back about my speedo not working (im shure "the regulars" rember) well i finally got arround to replacing the speed sensor in the rear diff and it did not fix my problem. i have already checked grounds as reccomended on my orginal post. i may have missed one somewhere but everything seemed ok. maybe someone can repost where the grounds are so i can double check make shure i didnt miss one. any other suggestions as to why my speedo works sometimes and sometimes it dont?
i dont mean to sound ignorant but i am getting ready for bed, if nobody has posted a diagnostic subroutine by tomarrow i will dig it up and post it for you, it sounds like youo have either a bad PSOM or a loose wire somewhere, i will be on tomarrow night and check this post first and if there is no links i'll throw one up
i had this same PITB problem. it ended up being bad wires from the PCM to the VSS. take you ohm tester and thest those wires!
a simple way to test the PSOM is to press and hold the select {i think thats the putton}button on the dash for 2-5 seconds, and your speedo tack should go all the way over to 85 and back down smoothly and will also say some numbers in the ODO reading gauge i dont remember what the numbers were but if ur speedo tack moves it should be fine.
also did u check that exiter ring while u had the VSS out? make sure its not loose or boogered up.
good luck
Mitch
Good point 79, The truck I'm trying to sell has the reluctor ring all chewed up from where the previous owner had splattered a set of gears. The speedo works fine until about 40mph then it starts bouncing. Check the reluctor out for sure.
reluctur ring good. i did a fluid change/inspection cause i found metal on the vss on the first round. there was a little bit of metal on it again when i put the new one in yesterday but not much.
