I have a 1984 ford f-350 with a 351 engine and wanted a stock tachometer in the vehicle. I found a setup from a 1981 ford f-250 with a 300 six and moved the whole dash assembly in and everything worked fine except the tach. It works sometime and then just dies. Then a couple days later it works a little and then stops again. I checked the ground connection and the hot to the tach and these are fine. The tach wire seems ok physically but I'm not quite shure what to do next. Anybody with any suggestions? could it be that the tach that I am using from the 6cyl ford has issues now being in an 8cyl vehicle??
I would double check the ground wire and also try cleaning the circuit board connector & plug. If you didn't have a tach, you may have a corrosion problem. You can try a good clean pencil erasure on the circuit board and plug or you can get connector cleaner from Radio Shack.
have checked the ground and seems solid, Also have cleaned the circuit board with eraser. could there be an issue with the tach signal via the wire. I was told that it has an inline resistor from the coil.. could this be bad?
