I went to change valve cover gaskets and exhaust manifold gaskets and found out the gaskets I got from autzo*** are the wrong size. Is the bolt pattern and port size completely different from other 390's? Help!
I went to a parts place for a set of 390 exhaust gaskets last week & found out there are 3 different kinds. Had to go home & get an old one to match em up..
That's part of the problem. The guy who sold me the truck said it was a 75. I go to the parts store and they don't have anything for a 390c and none of the gaskets are small enough. Finally, i go to a family owned parts store where the iq level is significantly higher and they find gaskets that fit 302's that will work on my ports. WHat the hells going on? I've got a 390 intake, I've got valve covers that say 390c on them, but 390 parts don't fit.
Thanks
John, First of all there isn't a 390c, there is a 351c. Do your spark plug wires look like this on each side \\//? That is a give away for the FE engine family that the 390 is a part of. A set of Felpro gaskets will work.

In the cool still quiet of night, you can hear chevies rusting away.
Another way to see if you have an FE is to look at where the intake manifold contacts the head. The valve cover goes over the head and part of the manifold vs. other ford engines where the valve cover only covers the head.
John, the simplest way to ID your motor is to count the number of bolts on each valve cover. If there are 5 bolts on each, you have a FE series big block (probably a 360 or a 390). If there are six bolts, you have a Windsor small block (289, 302 or 351W). If there are 7, you have a 385 series (429, 460) big block. Finally, if there are 8 on each valve cover, you have a Cleveland/Modified (351C, 351M, 400M).
jowilker has a point about the firing order. 13726548 is the standard for 351C/M/W and some 302HO. All automotive FE's use 15426378. Since there is only one "C", my guess is the engine in your truck is a 351C.
